📜 History of the Señor de Huanca
The devotion to the Señor de Huanca dates back to the 17th century and originates from two miraculous stories that explain how God chose this place to manifest Himself among people.
✨ First Appearance
In 1675, during the mining boom in Yasos, indigenous workers were being exploited by the Spanish. A miner named Diego Quispe defended a mistreated companion, which led to an order for his arrest. He fled at night and found refuge in a cave near Huanca, where he prayed for protection.
In the darkness, a radiant figure — the suffering Christ — appeared to him. Overwhelmed, Diego knelt and received a message of love and forgiveness. Jesus told him that this place would become a symbol of hope. At dawn, Diego marked the spot with a cross, beginning the devotion to the Señor de Huanca.
🌟 Second Appearance
Months later, in June, Diego returned with the priest of Chinchero and a group of believers. Upon entering the cave, the image of Christ appeared again, this time with fresh wounds. All of them witnessed the miracle, marking the first pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Huanca.
Since then, the Señor de Huanca has become a figure of faith, healing, and hope for thousands of believers who visit every year seeking comfort and spiritual renewal.
🎨 The Image of the Señor de Huanca
After the miracle, Diego Quispe asked a Cusqueñan painter to depict the image of Christ just as he had seen Him. The result was a religious artwork painted on the rock, which is still venerated today. Although the Church did not officially confirm the apparition, the faith of the people consecrated Huanca as a sacred and miraculous place.

Every year on September 14th, the main festivity of the Señor de Huanca is celebrated. Thousands of pilgrims walk from Cusco, San Salvador, or Calca to the sanctuary, taking part in masses, processions, and acts of faith that fill the Andean region with spirituality.
