Gran Pajatén Reveals Over 100 New Chachapoya Structures Thanks to Lidar Technology

An impressive archaeological discovery has come to light in the Río Abiseo National Park, in northern Peru. Thanks to a remote sensing scan using Lidar technology (Light Detection and Ranging), researchers have identified over 100 new structures belonging to the Chachapoya culture surrounding the Gran Pajatén archaeological complex.

This discovery quadruples the number of previously known structures in the area and reveals a network of interconnected roads, platforms, and buildings, confirming the existence of a ceremonial and administrative center far more complex than previously thought.

Declared a UNESCO Mixed World Heritage Site, Gran Pajatén remains a remote and difficult place to access. However, this new finding paves the way for future investigations that will provide deeper insight into the architectural and territorial sophistication of the ancient Chachapoya—known as the «Warriors of the Clouds.»
